Lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific, but invasive populations are now established along the southeast coast of the U.S., the Caribbean, and in parts of the Gulf of Mexico. Endangered Species Day 2018!

Seven different species of sea turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow sea grass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle, and even the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. Nautilus Productions LLC has documented many of them in our stock footage library. Human activities have tipped the scales against the survival of these ancient mariners. Nearly all species of sea turtle are classified as Endangered. Slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and over-exploitation. They also face habitat destruction and accidental capture in fishing gear. Climate change has an impact on turtle nesting sites. It alters sand temperatures, which then affects the sex of hatchlings. German U-Boat Sunk in Battle!

May 9, 1942: The U-352, a Type VIIC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine, was sunk off the coast of North Carolina on this date. The U-352 was sunk by depth charges launched by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Icarus. Fifteen members of the crew were killed in the engagement. The remaining 33 crewmen became the first German prisoners of war on U.S. soil. WATCH THE VIDEO!

Blackbeard’s Head & Bell Recovery Video Released!

In commemoration of the 300^th  anniversary of the grounding of Blackbeard’s flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Nautilus Productions has released two new video clips from the project. In 2005 underwater archaeologists on the Blackbeard's Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck Project uncovered the ship’s head or toilet from the stern area of the wreck. In 2006 an unmarked bell was recovered. This is the second bell found on the wreck site. Both were sent to the QAR Lab for conservation. For the first time short video excerpts of their recovery can be viewed on Nautilus’ YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2B004FADA64B9A59. The complete videos of the recoveries are available for license as part of Nautilus’ nearly two decade long digital record of archaeological efforts on the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

The infamous pirate Blackbeard ran his flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, aground just outside Beaufort Inlet, NC in June of 1718. He was later killed in a fierce battle near Ocracoke N.C. in November of 1718. Nautilus Productions is the exclusive owner and licensor of footage from Blackbeard the Pirate's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge (QAR). Since the 1996 discovery of the wreck by Intersal Inc. The Nautilus Productions staff has been the official video crew for the study and recovery of the infamous pirate Blackbeard's ship the Queen Anne's Revenge (La Concorde) since the projects inception. Project videographer, Rick Allen,  and our staff have worked with the North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Branch documenting this incredible underwater find. Nautilus Productions' duties have included the video documentation of site activities above and below the water as well as documenting the archaeological survey, provenience and recovery of artifacts from the shipwreck. My Films Are Being Stolen on YouTube!

There are currently hundreds of films from Direct Cinema’s past and current catalog that have been uploaded to YouTube and other sites like it. Every single one of them, from the popular PBS series Carrier to Disney’s Oscar® - winning animation short Tin Toy, is being streamed illegally. YouTube is fully aware that its site is rife with such content, which infringes on copyright and robs creatives of the earnings they deserve – even as the uploaders of the content make money from it via advertising. However, instead of actively seeking to curb piracy, YouTube puts the burden on copyright holders, like me, to flag videos for removal. It’s high time Congress forced these sites to own up to the stolen content that they inadvertently host, but openly use to turn a substantial profit. YouTube must be held responsible for the materials its users share, taking stronger measures to ensure that the person who uploads a video also owns its copyright. READ MORE

Changes to Group Photo Registration from The U.S. Copyright Office

Google v. Oracle & Fair Use!

In a closely watched case, the Federal Circuit held on Tuesday, March 27th that Google’s copying of the structure, sequence, and organization of Oracle’s Java application programming interface (API) library was not a fair use. The Federal Circuit remanded the case for a new trial to address damages. In holding for Oracle, the court found the fact that Google might also have a noncommercial motive in Android is irrelevant to the question of whether it still stood to profit from the use and also found Google’s use insufficiently transformative. The court noted that this case was simply about Google’s failure to properly license and to truly transform the APIs and about Google restricting Oracle’s abilities to market its works as a copyright owner. In a lawsuit that persists in federal court, a documentary filmmaker accuses North Carolina of committing a modern form of treasure looting: using his copyrighted underwater footage without permission. North Carolina, Filmmaker, Spar Before 4th Circuit Over Pirate Booty!

North Carolina asked the Fourth Circuit on Thursday to dismiss a lower court ruling that said the state pirated stock footage a North Carolina company had shot of the 18th Century pirate ship the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Nautilus Productions worked with the state to get access to the wreck and has since sold its footage for use in a number of Blackbeard documentaries. After a lower court ruled in favor of Nautilus, the state appealed arguing it has qualified and legislative immunity and therefore cannot be sued by private parties for copyright infringement. Diving Live From Blackbeard's Shipwreck!

In the fall of 2000 Rick Allen’s Nautilus Productions co-produced with Bill Lovin of Marine Grafics a groundbreaking, week long live internet broadcast known as QAR DiveLive from the Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge (QAR) shipwreck site. For the first time ever, live video and audio was broadcast from an underwater archaeological site to the world wide web. Students were able to watch the underwater archaeology in real time and ask questions of the scientists exploring the shipwreck. The twice-daily live distance learning programs reached an estimated 1600 students from as far away as Canada during the five days of broadcasting. In October of 2001 Allen and Lovin again co-produced QAR DiveLive 2001. This time the interactive webcasts from the seafloor and conservation laboratories of the Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck Project reached over 3600 students and another 2700 remote viewers from fifteen states and 2 countries during the five days of broadcasts. A Sword From Blackbeard’s Ship!

Long-time scuba diver Rick Allen makes his living as an underwater photographer. In 2011, he lost his arm in an accident and vowed that it would not stop him from recovering the pirate Blackbeard's ship from the bottom of the ocean. He was fitted with a prosthesis that would allow him to continue to scuba dive, and carry heavy equipment underwater. In June of 2013, he and his crew recovered a cannon and part of a sword.
